MEF Photography Blog! bio picture
  • Hello, friend! :D

Welcome, welcome! That's me over there. < -- I'm Molly, a San Francisco Bay Area-based photographer. I adore weddings, families and portraits, but my cat, food and house get a lot of my attention, too! I'm married to my very best friend, and we sing to each other a lot. I'm a mid-century modern home dweller. I'm always working, working, working to be better at life (a never-ending battle!). I get a kick out of simplicity, tea, bright colors, ice cream, cooking, sarcasm and books -- among other things. I love me some good, authentic, giggly love. And I love making people feel lovely in the midst of their good, authentic, giggly love. And if that's your thing, too, I'd love nothing more than to give you some good, authentic, giggly love photos. :)

Nicky + Chris | Stratford, CT | Engagement

Think back.  Way back.  A liiittle bit further back.  Are you in last August yet?  Is it warm and humid and maybe a bit overcast?  Do you have a huge bug bite on your calf and sand in your pants from crawling all over the beach?  Okay, good; you’re there.

We’re time traveling today because it was all the way back in August of last year that I spent an afternoon taking engagement photos for Nicky + Chris.  We wandered down to the beach near our old house, to the very driftwood log where Chris had proposed a few months before, and we had a great time.  I’m still working on posting back sessions, and it feels appropriate that I post these now because this past Monday was actually Chris + Nicky’s wedding day (which I also had the pleasure to photograph)!  I can’t wait to reveal the details of their wedding, but of course that will come in due time.  While we wait, let’s enjoy some photos of the happy couple lovin’ it up on the beach, shall we?

And before I start: Yes, that is Nicky’s natural hair color. :)

I love this one.  It’s so cinematic:

Seriously, how luscious is this grass?!

These next two just stop my little heart each time I look at them.  Beautiful!

Their wedding was amazing for a number of reasons.  Check back soon to see and hear all about it!

Recipe: Slow Cooker Chocolate Pulled Chicken Tacos

No, that’s not a typo.  These tacos do, in fact, have chocolate in them.  They also take practically no time to create (in hands-on terms), so they have quite a lot going for them.  Now, I know last week I waxed hippy about how much I like to be involved in my food, but I wanted to show you that there are also times when I have a lot of other things I have to do — and cooking is not a high priority.  The slow cooker is my answer to those days, and this is a great recipe that takes advantage of it.

Slow Cooker Chocolate Pulled Chicken Tacos

Serves 6 (Makes great leftovers)

2 cups store-bought salsa, plus more for serving (I used a fresh pico de gallo-type, but others would work)
2 tablespoons chili powder
2 tablespoons dried oregano
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
salt
2 1/2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts (though if you and your hips are looking for something a bit more decadent, leave the skins on or use chicken thighs)
18 tortillas (I prefer flour, but that’s just me)
1/2 cup fresh cilantro leaves
3/4 cup sour cream
1 lime, cut into wedges

In a 4- to 6-quart slow cooker, combine the salsa, chili powder, oregano, cocoa, and 1 teaspoon of salt.  Add the chicken and turn to coat.

Cover and cook until the meat is tender and pulls apart easily, about 5 hours on low.  Because this is low-fat chicken, I don’t recommend cooking on high — the slower you cook, the more tender the chicken.

20 minutes before serving, heat oven to 350.  Wrap stacked tortillas in foil and bake until warm, about 15 minutes.

Once the meat is cooked, switch slow cooker to the “keep warm” setting, then use forks to shred the chicken and stir into the cooking liquid.  Serve with tortillas, cilantro, sour cream, lime and extra salsa.  Some cheese wouldn’t hurt, either.

February 2010 Goals

That right there is my crummy iPhone photo-out-the-window representation of the month of February, though admittedly it was taken on January 28th.  But, in the interest of preparation (because I’m going to be busy shooting a fabulous wedding on the 1st), I thought I would take care of writing my goals for February a few days early!

So, I think what I’ll do is just write a list of goals and then recap how things went as of the first of the following month.  Without further delay, in February I will:

  • Drink one of my big ol’ 64 oz. jugs of water every day
  • Privately journal once a week (I miss writing)
  • Make fitness of equal importance to diet by going to the gym four times a week
  • Buy fabric and make awesome new pillows for our living room
  • Attempt to make potato bread (if I get my new KitchenAid Mixer, that is!)
  • Write my best friend a letter
  • Finish and order studio album one of three
  • Create the print display I’ve got stuck in my head
  • Clean out and reorganize the office (which involves getting rid of a really big, really heavy file cabinet)
  • Make my parents’ anniversary gift
  • Imbibe a fancy, fruity drink on a tropical beach (A gal can dream, can’t she?)

February is a short month, so this is stuffing it to the gills!  See you on March (MARCH!!?!) 1st!

Recipe: Bottle-Free Caesar Salad

In trying to decide which day of the week I would post recipes, I thought of some silly monikers for each — à la “Food Friday” (weak), “Whet it Wednesday” (obtuse), “Tasty Tuesday” (also weak), “Mastication Monday” (yeah)… you get the idea.  I also considered a forceful, straight-up “FOOD!”  because directness is often a good approach.  For now, I haven’t decided, so I’m going to let it float for a bit.  Though admittedly, I am leaning toward Wednesdays. :)  What do you think?  Any preferences?

Anywho!  On with the “FOOD!”

When it comes to cooking, I’m pretty hands on.  I don’t generally buy things precut, pre-washed, precooked.  I like the process of preparation — *I* want to be that “pre.”  When I can, I even grow my own vegetables and bake my own bread.  I find it relaxing, and it puts me closer to my meals, helps me understand what I’m eating.   Accordingly, for things like salad dressings and pasta sauces, if I can make them and have the time, I will.

But don’t get me wrong — I’m not fanatical.  I don’t make my own yogurt.  I love Paul Newman and instant oatmeal and rotisserie chicken from the grocery store.  It’s just that sometimes, making it yourself is simply better, not to mention a whole heck of a lot more fun.  So!  With that in mind, here’s a recipe for a really awesome caesar dressing that is quick and simple.  The only downside is that I made it yesterday, and my hands still smell like garlic. :)

Caesar Salad and Grilled Garlic Toasts

Serves 4

1 teaspoon plus 2 tablespoons olive oil
1 head garlic
1/2 baguette, cut into 1/2-inch-thick slices
2 anchovy fillets, finely chopped
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
2 hearts of romaine lettuce, trimmed and quartered lengthwise (if you’re feeling fancy — just tear it if you want to ditch the knife)
1/2 cup shaved or shredded parmesan

Heat grill to medium-high.  Place 1 teaspoon of oil and all but 2 cloves of garlic on a piece of heavy duty foil and close to form a pouch.  Grill, shaking pouch occasionally, until the garlic is soft, upwards of 12 minutes.  Grill the baguette slices until brown, approximately 1 minute per side.

Finely chop the 2 remaining garlic cloves and, pressing down with the side of a knife, pulverize (a.k.a. “smoosh”) with the anchovy fillets.  Mix the garlic and anchovies with the lemon juice, mustard, Worcestershire and the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil in a small container if saving, or in a large bowl if serving immediately.  Toss with the lettuce and sprinkle with parmesan.  Squeeze the grilled garlic cloves from their skins and serve smeared on toast (deadly good).

Note: For milder dressing, grill the entire head of the garlic and replace the raw cloves with grilled.  Personally, this fills me up on its own, but grill some chicken breasts alongside the garlic and it makes an awesome meal.  And if I’m feeling lazy, I skip the toasts and just go for the dressing.  I usually make extra dressing and save it in an air-tight container, eating it over the course of 2 or 3 days.  It gets a bit stiff when chilled, so let it come to room temperature before serving.

Enjoy!

Personal: My 2010 Goals

It’s (still relatively close to) the start of the new year, and with the annual flip of the calendar inevitably comes reflection on months past, as well as consideration of what’s to come.  A month or so ago I was writing a long overdue letter — longhand and everything — to my great aunt and uncle, a pair of the most influential and inspirational people in my life — on planet earth, even.  In the letter, I was catching them up on how my year had gone since I saw them last July and I unknowingly began to chronicle my business’ accomplishments in 2009.  I couldn’t believe I’d never done this before.  I mean, I’d thought about it, sure, but I’d never written it down, and I was kind of blown away by how far I’d come in such a short period of time.

In my surprise I wrote, “I may need to reevaluate my goals for 2010 — I don’t think I’m giving myself enough credit!”  If anything, this was an inadvertent lesson that I need to keep closer track of my goals and my dreams, lest I risk setting my expectations lower than I should.  I considered just writing them as a neat list in a notebook, but I found myself delaying the task.  It occurred to me that putting it out into the world might help.

So here I am, world.  And here are some of my goals (personal and professional) for 2010:

  • Shoot 15 weddings. This is a pretty darn modest goal, but it feels pretty darn perfect to me.  January isn’t yet over and I’m more than halfway there, so if I simply meet this goal or if I blow it right the heck out of the water, I will be happy either way.
  • Shoot a destination wedding outside of the United States. This one is actually happening very, very soon!  (Yes, I put goals on my list that I already know will be successful.)
  • Shoot a (Northern) California wedding. Having grown up there, I have this secret fantasy that my business will become bi-coastal.  So, for my mother’s sake, I’ll nurse this goal for as long as it takes.
  • Create and order my studio sample albums. I’ve visualized 2/3rds of them.  Time to just get them done!
  • Photograph and create a products page for my site.
  • Create and order some fancy sample canvases for my office. Just have to make decisions about photos and sizes.
  • Shoot more with artificial light. I have awesome equipment, but I always shy away from it in favor of natural light.  This year, I want to beg the pardon of my clients (and abuse some of their patience!) and work to use both.
  • Plan and execute at least two fully styled shoots with some hot, hot models, just for me. I already have the inspiration for one!  Just need to start taking the steps to put them together.
  • Foster strong relationships with at least two local vendors whose work I believe in. I want to develop a list of people whom I feel comfortable recommending to my clients, and vice versa.  Word of mouth (and the Internet) is the best advertisement small businesses can get.
  • Get a jaw-dropping flare shot from every sunny session I do. Lord do I love flare.
  • Find a second shooter I can rely on.
  • Find a stylist I can rely on.
  • Break into the high school senior portrait market. Spread the word.
  • Fine-tune my workflow and WRITE IT DOWN!
  • Have my work published online. Somewhere other than my own website, much though I love talking myself up!
  • Create a new blog header.
  • Finish posting all my old work.
  • Update my brand colors. They’re close, but they’re just slightly off from my vision.
  • Attend a workshop. I went to two last year, and they really helped get me on my feet.  A big part of investing in my business is investing in myself.
  • Come up with three regularly-occuring blog topics, and start writing them. I’ve got two — just need to think of a third!
  • Take more personal photos.
  • Lose 10 pounds. Only 3.5 more to go!  This goal is going to be conquered by February.  I’ve been using the “Lose It!” app on my iPhone for a couple of weeks and it has really helped me understand my eating habits and be accountable for them.  It’s free and totally recommended.  And yes, I’m still eating ice cream every day, just…less of it.
  • Drink more water. When will this not be on my goals list?  We’ll call it a chronic problem.
  • Finally decide what the heck I’m doing with my hair. Long?  Short?  What?  This is the longest it has been since I was 14 and I don’t know if I love it or hate it.  Time to decide!
  • Plan my parents’ 30th anniversary party.
  • Find a Northern CA photographer whose work I love enough to schedule a family portrait. I’m still looking, but our last “official” family photo was taken when I was TWELVE.  This is shameful.
  • Go to Iceland.
  • Talk to my friend Tamara more often.
  • Learn to make a good Curry Laksa.
  • Invite our best friends over and make Sukiyaki.
  • Finish that darn blanket I’ve been crocheting for over a year. Preferably before the weather gets warm!
  • Break at least one of my two worst habits. But I’m not saying which!

Certainly there are more, but for now this is good. :)  THIS is what I want to do this year.  So, I’m going to start blogging my monthly goals (though I’m skipping goals specifically for January), because I find their articulation therapeutic.  Plus, I really, really like to cross things off lists.

I’m going to go start working on my sample albums!  What’s one of your goals for this year?
