  • Hello, friend! :D

Welcome, welcome! That's me over there. < -- I'm Molly, a San Francisco Bay Area-based photographer. I adore weddings, families and portraits, but my cat, food and house get a lot of my attention, too! I'm married to my very best friend, and we sing to each other a lot. I'm a mid-century modern home dweller. I'm always working, working, working to be better at life (a never-ending battle!). I get a kick out of simplicity, tea, bright colors, ice cream, cooking, sarcasm and books -- among other things. I love me some good, authentic, giggly love. And I love making people feel lovely in the midst of their good, authentic, giggly love. And if that's your thing, too, I'd love nothing more than to give you some good, authentic, giggly love photos. :)

April 2010 Goals + Those Pillows I Made

Hello, Springtime!

I don’t spend much money; I’m kind of miserly, actually.  It all started when I decided I wanted a master’s degree and I wanted to pay for it in cash, which involved a lot of saving and, consequently, a lot of not spending.  And because I did this for just about two years, it became a permanent habit.  There is, however, one soft spot in my hardened heart — flowers.  So when I entered the supermarket faced with an endless row of sweet potted tulips and daffodils, I melted… just a little.  And then when I saw those persimmon-colored roses and those jaw-dropping ranunculus I may have lost consciousness for a minute or two — a sort of state of pre-shock to spending $10.  And then I spent $10!  I’m pretty happy with the purchase, and it inspired one of my April goals.  And when you scroll on down to my completed March goals, you’ll see just why those persimmon roses increased my heart rate a touch.  So!  On with the list!

April Goals (March holdovers in italics):

  • Finish and order studio album TWO of three
  • Put on real, adult clothes at least 4 weekdays/week (Hey, when you work from home, pajama pants are much more inviting)
  • Keep fresh flowers in my house all month!
  • Do my taxes (barf)
  • Visit my family in California
  • Bring back something very secret and important from my trip (Shh!)
  • Orchestrate a just-for-me shoot
  • Do a couple of free kids sessions, just to get my imagination going
  • Privately journal once a week (This one is kicking my rear)
  • Create the print display I’ve got stuck in my head

Completed March Goals:

  • Print and frame one of my old architectural photos for our house – Currently at the frame shop!  Custom framing is stupidly expensive.
  • Go for a horseback riding weekend in Massachusetts with our best friends – The trails were too devastated by a recent ice storm to ride, but we enjoyed ourselves, anyway!
  • Keep up with the water / exercise
  • Make the awesome new pillows for our living room – SEE BELOW, PLEASE!
  • Attempt to make potato bread – Attempt?  Try, success!  I couldn’t find a recipe I liked, so I winged it.  Who ever said baking was a science?
  • Finish and order studio album one of three
  • Get rid of that dang file cabinet!
  • Make my parents’ anniversary gift

In the vein of not wanting to spend too much money, has anyone ever looked at the cost of fancy throw pillows?!  Are you kidding me?!  Who spends $300 ON A PILLOW?  A PILLOW??!  Please.  Enter on-sale silk fabric and a free afternoon or two.  I think I spent $50 total for seven pillows.  The results:

First, my favorite: The petal pillow.

Crochet + Squares!

Knit + Pleated!  Plus, in the background, you can see the inspiration piece: the persimmon KitchenAid.  SO MUCH BREAD!

And, just because they’re so dang pretty:

What are your plans for April?

Recipe: Mushroom + Barley Soup

Winter is slowly winding down — one (ME!) can only hope the snow is gone for good.  But we do have a week of rain in our future here in Connecticut, and so I think it’s fitting to squeeze in at least one more soup recipe before the weather warms for spring.  I made this particular soup for the first time last week; it was extremely easy, but delivered great flavor and the leftovers were stellar.  Highly recommended!

Mushroom + Barley Soup

Serves 4

1/3 cup pearl barley, rinsed and drained
7 cups chicken or vegetable stock (I used half of each, because it’s what I had)
1 bay leaf
1 tablespoon butter
12 oz mushrooms, thinly sliced (I used button, but cremini would be equally nice)
1 teaspoon olive oil
1 onion, finely chopped
2 carrots, thinly sliced (more wouldn’t hurt)
1 tablespoon chopped fresh tarragon, plus extra to garnish (I used 1 teaspoon dried)
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley, plus extra to garnish
salt and pepper

Bring 2 cups of stock to a boil in a small saucepan.  Add the bay leaf and a pinch of salt.  Stir in the pearl barley, reduce heat, cover and simmer for 40 minutes.

Meanwhile, melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat.  Add the mushrooms, season with salt and pepper, and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden brown, about 10 minutes.  Remove mushrooms from the pan.

Heat oil in in the same saucepan over medium heat and add the onions and carrots.  Cover and cook for about 3 minutes, stirring occasionally until the onion is softened.

Add the remaining stock and bring to a boil.  Stir in the mushrooms and the barley with its cooking liquid.  Reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for about 20 minutes, or until the carrots are tender, stirring occasionally.

Stir in the tarragon and parsley.  Taste and adjust the seasoning, if necessary.  Ladle into large bowls, garnish with fresh parsley and tarragon and serve.

Recipe: Asian Chicken Wings

Comfort food means different things to different people.  To my honey (and likely many more!), it probably means fried chicken; to others, a heaping scoop of ice cream fits the bill.  But for me, I often apply the label to any recipe that comes from my mother, my childhood, my life.  Sometimes the food is just plain ol’ bad for me, but not always.  Sometimes it falls under that catchall term of “American,” though often it doesn’t.  What matters is that the dishes remind me of the happiness I feel when I’m gathered around the table with my loved ones — of the comfort of family.

I make a concerted effort to bring these recipes into the family-of-two I have now, in the hope of fostering that same feeling of warmth and love between us.  Because while we may be smaller in number around the table, I am reminded of that greater connection while we eat and laugh and lick our fingers and enjoy one another’s company.  This is one of those recipes.  This is one that my family has been eating and laughing and licking fingers over for as long as I can remember.  Just  the smell of it makes my day better.  This is comfort food.

A bit of a warning, though: This is NOT date food.  It’s meant to be messy — though I welcome you to eat it primly with knife and fork like a civilized person.  But, if you’re planning to impress someone, I’d say leave this recipe in the drawer…for now. :)

Asian Chicken Wings

Serves 2-3

2 lbs chicken wings (separated into wingettes and drumsticks, wingtips cut off if necessary)
1 teaspoon salt (optional)
1 tablespoon sherry or rice wine
1-2 tablespoons vegetable oil
4 tablespoons soy sauce
1 bunch of green onions (scallions), ends trimmed and cut into 1″ lengths
2 tablespoons water
4-6 tablespoons oyster sauce (more oyster sauce = saltier finished product)
1 1/2 cups short grain white rice, cooked according to package instructions, for serving

Marinate the wing pieces for at least 1 hour (and up to 6) in the salt, sherry, soy sauce and green onions.  Agitate the container occasionally to distribute the marinade.

When ready to cook, heat oil in a large fry pan over medium-high heat.  Remove wings from marinade, scraping off as much of the green onions as possible.  Set aside marinade and onions.

Add wings to the pan and brown well on all sides.  Once brown, add oyster sauce, water, and remaining marinade and onions.  Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 15 minutes, or until tender.

Serve wings and sauce on top of rice.  Eat with fingers.  Laugh and enjoy.

March 2010 Goals

Considering I spent the weekend staring out the window at freezing rain, I am still finding it hard to believe that it is actually March — but it is!  The seeds of spring will soon be sown, I’m sure of it.  My excitement for warmer weather aside, the winter hasn’t been so bad.  February was a monumental month for me and my business, but it seemed to be over in a flash, leaving much of my original goals list at least unfinished, if not totally untouched.   I was, however, somewhat successful and did get quite a bit done (listed and commented upon, below).  And if anything, what I didn’t finish leaves me with much to look forward to this month!  Onto the new goals, and the recap — and feel free to share a goal of your own in the comments!

March Goals (February holdovers in italics):

  • Print and frame one of my old architectural photos for our house
  • Go for a horseback riding weekend in Massachusetts with our best friends
  • Keep up with the water / exercise
  • Privately journal once a week
  • Make the awesome new pillows for our living room
  • Attempt to make potato bread
  • Finish and order studio album one of three
  • Create the print display I’ve got stuck in my head
  • Get rid of that dang file cabinet!
  • Make my parents’ anniversary gift

Completed February Goals:

  • Drink one of my big ol’ 64 oz. jugs of water every day — This led to a lot of late-night water chugging and weird bathroom dreams, but I did it!
  • Make fitness of equal importance to diet by going to the gym four times a week
  • Buy fabric and make awesome new pillows for our living roomFabric bought, pillows still in the works!
  • Write my best friend a letter
  • Attempt to make potato bread — This month I tackled white bread, challah and wheat bread, all of it wonderful. I’m still on the lookout for a good potato bread recipe, which I may receive this week.
  • Clean out and reorganize the office (which involves getting rid of a really big, really heavy file cabinet)Office cleaned and organized; file cabinet, sadly, still stalwartly in place!
  • Imbibe a fancy, fruity drink on a tropical beach — Montego Bay, Jamaica!  See exhibit A, above.  Note that I was being told a very inappropriate joke at the time.  Also, the beverage was banana flavored.

Nicky + Chris | Montego Bay, Jamaica | Wedding

Okay, so when I set a February goal of wanting to drink a fruity beverage on a tropical beach, I admit it wasn’t all daydreaming on my part.  That’s because I already knew that Nicky + Chris (engagement session) would be getting married on February 1st in Montego Bay, Jamaica.  And I also already knew that they wanted me to photograph it.  What can I say?  I like a sure thing. :)

I’ll keep the yap-yapping short on this one, because I had one heck of a time narrowing down the photos, so there’s plenty enough to look at without my typing away.  But allow me to say these two things: 1) With a gorgeous couple and an idyllic backdrop, my job has never been easier, and 2) We left freezing blizzards and ended up here:

Enough said!  Enjoy!

I’ll start off with what may be the most awesome beach wedding ring shot OF. ALL. TIME.  I promise no harm came to this hermit crab, aside from maybe annoyance whilst we attempted to herd him into the right spot.  He actually walked over the rings on the first try.  PERFECTO!

After a morning on the beach, Nicky started her afternoon with hair and makeup.

HELLO!  This was actually surprisingly difficult to do.  First, I’m short and needed assistance to get that dress up there.  Second, that assistant is standing directly off camera right because, though that hanger is hooked in tight, it was INSANELY windy that day.  My assistant had a bit of a heart attack, but I assure you, the dress was safe.

Chris had it pretty easy; he spent most of his afternoon getting a massage.  Then he and the boys converged upon our hotel room to begin the arduous task of… rolling up their sleeves. :)

To the ceremony!  I LOVE this shot of Nicky and her mom walking down the “aisle.”  If that isn’t a look of genuine happiness, I don’t know what is.
Chris seeing his bride. :)

Bridal party photos are all well and good, certainly.  But once they’re done, why not have some fun?
First dance.
I’m not sure what it is about this one, but I find it beautiful.

Tip to brides considering a destination wedding: FAKE FLOWERS!  Nicky went out to a local craft store before she left, bought a mix of roses and calla lilies and had a florist-friend help her turn them into bouquets.  She packed them in her suitcase and then forgot about them.  They looked great, and if I didn’t know they were fake, I wouldn’t have guessed it!  Great idea.

Because their wedding was late in the afternoon, Nicky + Chris opted for a “Day After” session, so most of their portraits were taken later.  In fact, the night after their wedding, I convinced them to take advantage of this gorgeously lighted tree on the resort’s beach.  I’m glad we did, because this series is freaking awesome.  I shall do this with a tree I own, if one day I’m lucky enough to own a whole tree!

Favorite!

The next morning, we woke up bright and early and took advantage of the beautiful Jamaican surf and sun.  Day After sessions are such a great idea — especially if you’re camera shy and want to be relaxed.  They take the pressure off, AND they let you get stunning shots, like this:

AND THIS!AND THIS!
AND OMG THIS!

AND HOLY MOLY THIIIIIS!  (You get my point.  This one is definitely a favorite.)

Me: “Make a face that represents how you feel about the fact that you just got married in Jamaica!”  Chris: “…”

GQ.

This might be one of my most favorite photos I’ve ever taken.

Nicky, you’re stunning.  No kidding.

And last but  not least:

A huge thank you to Nicky + Chris for giving me the awesome opportunity to photograph their destination wedding.  It was an honor and a very serious pleasure.  I mean, it’s not every day that I get to mix work with five days of snorkeling and lounging on the beach!  I hope you love your photos because they are going to be ALL OVER MY STUDIO. :)
