MEF Photography Blog! bio picture
  • Hello, friend! :D

Welcome, welcome! That's me over there. < -- I'm Molly, a San Francisco Bay Area-based photographer. I adore weddings, families and portraits, but my cat, food and house get a lot of my attention, too! I'm married to my very best friend, and we sing to each other a lot. I'm a mid-century modern home dweller. I'm always working, working, working to be better at life (a never-ending battle!). I get a kick out of simplicity, tea, bright colors, ice cream, cooking, sarcasm and books -- among other things. I love me some good, authentic, giggly love. And I love making people feel lovely in the midst of their good, authentic, giggly love. And if that's your thing, too, I'd love nothing more than to give you some good, authentic, giggly love photos. :)

Inspiration: My New Office

As some of you already know, MEF Photography is about to make a move.  We’ve sold our home and are heading a bit farther south to be closer to my Honey’s work.  It’s partly because he’s tired of the commute and partly because I’m tired of him spending two hours a day in the car and not with me!  Okay, mostly because I’m tired. :)

Besides having him home in 10 minutes instead of 60+, another benefit of the move is that our new place will have an extra room for my office!  Ever since we picked up our keys this weekend, I’ve been thinking about it nonstop — imagining what I could do with a work space that doesn’t share my bedroom.  I’ve had a couple of elements picked out for some time now (color palette, lighting), but I’ve spent today compiling a wishlist.  Most of it I can’t afford at the moment, but hey, it’s fun to dream, right?

Let’s play decorate!

  1. The Daily System (Pottery Barn): Sleek, wall-mounted organization to get things off of surfaces and keep dates clear.  Specifically, I’m interested in the magnetic whiteboard calendar, the corkboard, the office organizer and the letter bin.
  2. Finnia Rug (Anthropologie): I adore the colors in this rug — the golds and that luscious splash of purple.  My palette is persimmon (my logo color), ochre and white, but I love that this rug opens up the options for other accents.  Too bad I can’t afford it yet!
  3. Photographer’s Task Table Lap (Pottery Barn): Perfect?  Yes.  Compact and simple but detailed.  I can’t decide between antique nickel or bronze, though.  I think I’m leaning toward bronze.  They also have awesome floor lamp options.
  4. Kassett Storage Boxes (Ikea): Orange is persimmon’s best friend!  Great for hiding away the little things that don’t fit anywhere else.
  5. Magnetic Timer (Anthropologie): I was introduced to this timer at the Love Affair Workshop over the summer.  It was a blue one, but I love the timer in this color.  Great for making sure you really, truly and honestly spend only 30 minutes checking email!
  6. Recycled Stadium Bulbs (Anthropologie): These are cast-off warehouse lightbulbs repurposed as sculpture.  I love how delicate they are, and I think they’re a surprise change from your usual tchotchke table decoration.

That’s just what I came up with today.  It’s too bad I’m only good at decorating in theory; I’ve never quite figured it out in the flesh.  But we’ll see what we can do with the new space as I want it to be inviting and conducive to monumental amounts of productivity!

For those of you who have offices, what’s your favorite element?  I’d love to see it!

Marissa + Junior | New Haven, CT | Engagement

It’s ladybug season here in Connecticut, which means that every couple of days a quick glance up to the corners of the room will reveal new nests of these sweet, yet obnoxious little critters.  In fact just now I am listening to one of them fling its little red body full-force into the metal can of the recessed light above my head.  *tink, tink, tink*  The news is continually pleading with us to get over our beliefs that the bugs are cute, because those sweet black spots belie a fiendish propensity for plant eating and native-bug killing.  “Extinguish them,” the papers say!  Yet even still I find myself looking to the light above me and smiling at those little wings, only to curse my stupidity when I am quickly blinded by a compact flourescent.

Which brings me to the awesome couple I met up with this past Monday.  Marissa and Junior are getting married next August, but wanted to do their engagements now so they could use their photos for a personalized save the date card.  I was happy to oblige, so we met up at Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven on a bright and sunny afternoon when there was just enough warmth to make us grateful for the final days of fall we have left.

So what does this have to do with ladybugs?  To put it mildly, I was blind after this shoot.  I was so drawn to the beauty and warmth of the setting fall sun that I spent much of our hour and a half session shooting straight into it.  The photos turned out great, but somehow, I never learn.  *tink, tink, tink*

In other news, I’ve decided to up the visual impact and make my blog photos as large as they can be.  Let’s start with my favorite.

I’m not generally a huge fan of ring shots, but how can I pass up that flare?

Marissa and Junior, I look forward to your wedding next August!  And I promise to memorize at least a few dozen jokes to keep Junior laughing. :)

Baby Whitney | Southern CT | Family

I have a confession to make: I LOVE baby photos.  LOVE them.

Admittedly, I am nowhere near ready for my own children.  For the time being, I am very content with the east coast family of two I’ve been working on for the last two years.  But even still, photographing newborns and then staring at those photographs while my insides just burst with joy is too much fun.

Which brings me to Whitney.  Or “One Eyed Whitney,” as her parents lovingly call her.  Jenn and Geoff welcomed this sweet girl into their lives on September 30, and I had the pleasure of taking her picture about 10 days later on October 10th.  But why “One Eyed?”  See, Whitney has a habit of checking out her new world with only one eye open — and I don’t blame her.  In fact, I do the same thing each morning.  For about the first 10 minutes of the day, I experience life with just one eye.  It makes the transition from sleeping to waking (and I imagine, womb to world), a bit smoother.  And though Whitney looks extraordinarily calm in all of these photos, she couldn’t decide whether or not she was asleep or awake for the entire two hours I was with her (despite the 80-degree temperatures we were enjoying in the room).  However, heavy doses of rocking, back rubbing and pacifier plying made for some good photos. :)

I experimented with the editing of this set, which turned out a bit different from what I usually do.  I thought these images deserved a certain sort of softness, and I think I managed that pretty well.

So without further ado, here’s little Whitney.

Baby eyelashes?  Is there anything more precious than that?

I think this one is my favorite.  It’s so soft and warm.  Plus, those lips!
She’s like a little frog!

The lighting in this next one is just perfect.

Look at the love and pride of Geoff’s face.  You can immediately tell he’s happy to be a father, and that he so cares for his wife and his new family.

Baby Molly | West Haven, CT | Family

I realized after I posted Lacy + Gene’s engagement that I would not be chronicling my past work in order.  Likely a fact no one other than me would notice or worry about.  However, this bungle has turned into a blessing.  You see, last week I ventured out to get my first haircut in over six months.  I love my long hair, but it was desperately in need of a trim.  And while I would normally wait for a trip back to my folks’ house in California to visit my old friend Stephanie for this service, I decided it couldn’t wait.  So I made an appointment with the stylist of a good friend with great hair because, people, hair shouldn’t feel like straw (Mine did!).  Trust me, it couldn’t wait.

To put it simply: I should have waited.

Afterward, I said to that same good-haired friend that if I disappeared, she’d have to describe me to the police as a 5’4″-tall woman in her twenties with mid-length brown hair.  Hair like this has no other descriptor — just “mid-length.”  It is neither long nor short.  I haven’t layers or bangs.  It’s.. plain.

What has this to do with the chronology of my blog, you’re wondering?  As I sit here and twist the blunt ends of my new, perfectly unremarkable haircut, I find I am in serious need of a pick-me-up.  And because I’m not blogging in order, I have the luxury of choosing a photo shoot which brings me great joy: that of baby Molly (Good choice!), the precious daughter of Kate and Tim, taken in August.

I adore the way babies smile — full-on, no self-consciousness, drool, teeth and big cheeks.  If this doesn’t make us all just a little happier (and make me forget about my haircut!), we’re all in trouble.

Inspiration

Today is one of those days when I have a million things to do and not enough hours in which to do them. One of those days when I think I might just be crazy for having three jobs (all three of which require attention today).

Today is one of those days when I need a good photo to keep me going. So I present to you: my calm blue ocean.
