MEF Photography Blog! bio picture
  • Hello, friend! :D

Welcome, welcome! That's me over there. < -- I'm Molly, a San Francisco Bay Area-based photographer. I adore weddings, families and portraits, but my cat, food and house get a lot of my attention, too! I'm married to my very best friend, and we sing to each other a lot. I'm a mid-century modern home dweller. I'm always working, working, working to be better at life (a never-ending battle!). I get a kick out of simplicity, tea, bright colors, ice cream, cooking, sarcasm and books -- among other things. I love me some good, authentic, giggly love. And I love making people feel lovely in the midst of their good, authentic, giggly love. And if that's your thing, too, I'd love nothing more than to give you some good, authentic, giggly love photos. :)

Styled Inspiration Shoot: Let Love Grow

Now that our beautiful styled shoot has been shared on 100 Layer Cake’s Blog, I can finally share with you some of the MANY images that didn’t make it into the final post.

Narrowing down which photos to submit for publication was hard enough — but we managed to get it to 100.  Narrowing it down for the blog?  Oh my!  I didn’t even count.  Ready?

I’ll include the original description of our inspiration and thinking that we sent along with the submission, just in case you’re interested. :)

“Spurred by the thawing of winter, the blossoming of spring, and the gorgeous silhouettes of oak trees in the Sonoma area, this shoot focuses on blending natural textures with bright, bold colors and details. The result is an soft and inviting combination of light-hearted playfulness and serene sophistication, which maintains an authentic, personal feel.

We began with a simple theme that we wanted to incorporate throughout the details of the day: Growth — of love, of nature, of pleasure and passion. This is reflected primarily in our location choice. Running Rabbit Ranch is a small, private, well-manicured winery in Sonoma, but instead of shooting amidst the rigidity of the vines and buildings, we selected the raw, untouched portions of the property, overgrown with wild grasses and trees. Our main table, provided by Amanda, was set in a grove of oaks, which provided shade and an elegant natural arbor for an intimate gathering. The floral arrangements, created by Leigh, highlight stages of growth — from charmingly delicate single buds to an explosion of full blooms in oranges, yellows, and corals. And the oak vases were custom made by Molly, who hollowed them out from fallen limbs collected on her family’s property, being careful to leave the natural lichen intact. Our living place cards, made by wrapping flag banners around a sprig or two of fresh herbs (in this case, thyme), were a clever, quick and cheap (especially if you grow your own ahead of time!) addition of Laurel’s. Molly also sewed the burlap runner — a great (and extraordinarily cheap!) alternative to rented linens — the raw edges of which added a dose of rough texture to an otherwise feminine tablescape.

The guest “book” table is nod to elementary school: an interactive paper link chain, which guests “grow” as they write notes of congratulations and add their links. Laurel selected brightly colored paper in a variety of shades, sizes and weights (including vellum, which glowed in the sunlight) to add depth to the station — one of our favorites! We also carried the theme to our favors — individual basil, zinnia, and sage seedlings, grown in biodegradable pots to make for easy planting once guests return home. These were sown weeks ahead of time, requiring only occasional watering — a great timesaver. Laurel designed the sweet thank you cuffs which slipped easily around each pot and helped to carry along our color scheme. And the precious labels (so guests knew exactly what they were taking home) tied into the place cards on the main table, too.

We had a hard time choosing our absolute favorite table, but the drink and dessert station was a strong contender! The gorgeous table itself, also provided by Amanda, was a precious backdrop that allowed us to focus on color, from bright paper straws and gorgeous flowers, to tasty sodas (both for the eyes and the palate). Keeping costs down for a small wedding was an important consideration for us, so we baked and frosted our own cake a couple days ahead of time — and it was funfetti! A simple flower adornment was all it needed. But one of the crowning glories was our ice cubes: they’re heart-shaped! Laurel snagged some adorable trays and started making the ice early. They acted as a perfect reminder of the spirit of the day.

Finally, a big nod to our gorgeous models, who are marrying this fall in San Francisco. Julie and Cole did a fabulous job, and Julie looked stunning. Betten kept her hair soft and loose, with a couple of cute braids, and her makeup bright, but not overpowering. And a thank you to Julie for selecting and styling their outfits!

This process was truly a team effort, as we met regularly to discuss everything from flower types, to frosting flavors, to transportation plans. While each contributor is being credited with what they “major” in, a truly fluid team was born. We’re already scheming on what their next inspiration should be, so stay tuned…! :)”

Enjoy!

The dessert table was so freaking amazing.  If we’d had time to actually eat and drink all that gorgeousness, we absolutely would have.  Sadly, the funfetti cake went to its early grave uneaten.  Tragedy.  Check out those heart-shaped ice cubes, though!

Our favors were individual basil, zinnia and sage seedlings in biodegradable pots.  Freaking adorable, right?

But the pièce de résistance was, without a doubt, the guest book table.  I mean, holy heck, what’s not to love about this?

And of course, my very favorite part: the people.  My friend Julie and her fiancé Cole were gracious enough to take off work and drive up to Sonoma to model for us.  Julie may very well be the most beautiful woman I have ever photographed.  And to top it off, she’s super kind, too.  Amazing.

This was such an awesome and rewarding experience for me.  I don’t really have words for how lucky I feel to have been a part of this, and to have walked away with such good friends in my collaborators.  I can’t wait for the next one we’re planning — we’re going modern! :)

Of all the ways to start a Thursday morning, a feature of your hard work on an awesome wedding blog is a pretty great one!

I am so pleased to finally be able to share the styled shoot that we’ve been toiling over for what seems like decades!  Over the last several months, I’ve gotten together with the talented hands and minds of Amanda (One True Love Vintage Rentals), Laurel (Esla Events) and Leigh (Leigh Okies Events).  Even though the majority (okay, all) of our meetings devolved into story telling and laughing over good wine and snacks, somehow we still managed to put together an absolutely lovely inspirational shoot that was not only beautiful, but a total blast to produce.  I am so, so proud of our little team, and I can’t wait to start work on our next idea!

Click the image below to check out the whole post.  There are SO MANY MORE photos to share, which I’ll post soon, so be sure to check back!

Happy Thursday!

Wedding Florals + Design by Leigh Okies Events

Yesterday evening I met up with my friend Leigh.  If there were ever a person whose style I’d just like to go ahead and 100% steal, it’s hers — my lord is her apartment gorgeous!

After years of dabbling, Leigh is officially starting up her floral business this year, and goodness she is wonderful at it.  She recently did all the flowers for a styled shoot I photographed (which I’ll get to share this Thursday, finally!), and she has such great attention to detail.  Her use of color and texture without sacrificing the beauty of simplicity is admirable, and results in some stunning details.  Not surprisingly, Leigh is also a very talented designer, and has put together some precious wedding suites.  When she asked me last week if I’d be willing to photograph the details from a Palm Springs wedding she did two seasons ago (but of which she had no pictures!), I couldn’t say yes fast enough.

And she did not disappoint!  Leigh had so many amazing props in her house to use as decoration, and I think we managed to reflect quite well the sort of warmed-up-rustic-desert feeling we were going for.

I could not more highly recommend Leigh.  She is sweet, hard-working, and unbelievably gifted.  Enjoy. :)

June 2011 Goals

Early last month, Glen and I flew to Indianapolis to meet our wedding photographers and have our engagement photos taken.  I almost don’t have words for the experience.  It was a pleasure and I treasure these photos — some of the only, and definitely the best, of Glen and I during our entire relationship.  Of all the things I’ve ever done to better myself as a photographer (reading, studying, classes, seminars, webinars, you name it — and yeah, I have a long way to go), this was by far the most eye-opening and informative.  What a delight to put myself in the shoes of my clients, to feel the nervous self-consciousness and the agony of being camera shy melt away into comfort — and to know why it melted. Looking at these images, you wouldn’t know how, a few hours before, I was neurotically combing the aisles of Target trying to guarantee we were properly accessorized.  You wouldn’t know how apprehensive I was (Glen, by the way, was fine.).  You can’t tell how much I do not love to be photographed.

What you can tell is that I love Glen, that Glen loves me, and that as a pair we have a lot of fun together. THIS is what I want my photos to showcase.  And having been their subject, I have a clearer understanding of how to get this out of my own clients — even the nervous ones!

I’ve always had a problem with the term “timeless photos.”  I think timeless is the wrong word, and the wrong goal.  At some point in the future, our clothes, our styles, some of these poses, even the media itself will be outdated — it’s inevitable and unavoidable.  The issue, I believe, is that people mistake the concept of timelessness with simple beauty, which encompasses only a small part of any image.  What we should strive for beyond beauty, and what I hope to focus on in the future, is authenticity.  In twenty years I want my children (look away, mom) to see these photos and be able to laugh at my hair and choice of shoes, but know that Glen and I were once young, little affected by gravity and totally in love. ;)

Because in the end, that’s the whole point, isn’t it?  Welcome to June. :)

June Goals (May holdovers in italics):

  • Meet with my personal trainer twice a week — She is already kicking my rear in a way I’ve never experienced before, and it’s kind of amazing (I type this with REALLY sore abs and arms today)
  • Kick my own rear two to three other times per week — Gotta do my part!
  • Find a model for a personal project
  • Visit Connecticut
  • Meet my goddaughter, if she’s born on time — She’d better be born on time! (Otherwise I’ll just meet her in July.) ;)
  • Buy that sweet new baby some presents
  • Contest a dumb parking ticket
  • Meet a new photography friend for coffee
  • A SECRET! — Lame, I know, but I can’t talk about this; I’ve been sworn to secrecy and I’ve been told I have to keep my hopes realistic (Did the all caps give away that I’m failing?)
  • TWO SECRETS! — This is a surprise for someone, actually, which is why I can’t share ;)
  • Hopefully unveil the rest of our styled shoot — Submitted for publication!  Just waiting for that to happen.
  • Repaint our coffee table — Turns out old paint is kind of gross.  Must get new paint!
  • Blog twice this month
  • Shoot a little film — Gotta hunt out a new battery

Completed May Goals:

  • Start with a personal trainer — Yeah, time to stop being a lazy slug :)
  • Get our engagement photos taken — :D
  • Celebrate Mother’s Day and both Glen’s and my birthdays
  • Surprise Glen with his AWESOME birthday present and put it to good use — I got him the bike he’s been drooling over for months and we LOVE riding together
  • Buy my return ticket for my trip to Connecticut next month
  • Adopt a pet :) — See previous post
  • Finish my best friends’ wedding album — Can’t wait to get this in my hands!  And theirs!
