MEF Photography Blog! bio picture
  • Hello, friend! :D

Welcome, welcome! That's me over there. < -- I'm Molly, a San Francisco Bay Area-based photographer. I adore weddings, families and portraits, but my cat, food and house get a lot of my attention, too! I'm married to my very best friend, and we sing to each other a lot. I'm a mid-century modern home dweller. I'm always working, working, working to be better at life (a never-ending battle!). I get a kick out of simplicity, tea, bright colors, ice cream, cooking, sarcasm and books -- among other things. I love me some good, authentic, giggly love. And I love making people feel lovely in the midst of their good, authentic, giggly love. And if that's your thing, too, I'd love nothing more than to give you some good, authentic, giggly love photos. :)

Baby Livia | New Haven, CT | Family

The first time I met little miss Livia — our last Photo Party babe — was about a month before I photographed her, when I took pictures of her momma, Christa, for Christa’s new fitness website.  At our first rendezvous, Livia was a total ham, all about playing and showing off for me.  She flirted with me like we were two pre-teens at a junior high sock hop and by golly, it was adorable.

The second time I met Livia, however, went a little differently.  Even though she was rested, fed, dressed to the nines and happy as can be, as soon as we tried to put her in the sand she clung to Christa like a fly in honey.  There was no letting go, and no amount of coaxing (okay, bribery by seashells) would change her mind.  Behold:

Check out that death grip on Dad!

She was not having any of it!  That is until we exploited Livia’s Achilles Heel.  :)  See, my own mom has this theory that who kids are as kids is a pretty good indication of who they’ll be as adults.  Kudos to you if you assumed that I was a stubborn baby.  In fact, my mom’s favorite example of this is when my parents served my four-year-old brother and three-year-old me Sunday morning pancakes on these silly melamine plates we’d made in preschool.  Unfortunately for all involved, my mom put my brother’s pancakes on the plate I’d made (MY PLATE), so logically I refused to eat.  While my brother happily chomped away (he was an amiable babe), I sat beside him with my arms crossed and my eyes locked on his breakfast.  Despite much cajoling, I left my own food untouched and waited patiently until my brother finished and got up from the table.  Then I reached over, picked up the empty plate, slid my pancakes onto their proper home and only THEN ate them.  Off MY PLATE.  Which is totally reasonable.  Rational, even.

ANYWAY.  Because of this theory, I am pretty confident in saying that our dear Livia is going to have one serious purse collection when she grows up.  Apparently, nothing makes her happier than carrying on her arm everything she can possibly lift.  And while actual purses are probably a bit more practical, any ol’ receptacle will do — especially if there are two of them!  Instant smiles.  Again, behold:

Suddenly the sand was no longer an issue.

Playing in it was now a much higher priority. :)

LOVE IT!

How flipping precious is Livia’s outfit?  These either need to come in adult sizes, or I need to be 17 months old again.  Better the latter, as I don’t think anyone wants to see that high up on my thighs.  But I love the buttons.

And I’ll end with a photo that perfectly represents Livia’s mischievous nature.  Luckily, it’s all cute mischief.  (Note the two bucket handles over her arms.)  :)

Christa, as always it was a massive pleasure to work with you and your family!  Livia is a doll (just like her mom!) and I had a great time with her.  Can’t wait to do it again in the fall!  Enjoy. :)

Baby Abby | New Haven, CT | Family

I think I can really get into this whole “morning blogging to avoid exercising” thing.  I sit here in my exercise clothes, so I feel like I’m on my way to sweating (yet remain a very comfortable distance from wanting to die), PLUS I get a blog entry written.  Nothing about this is bad!

My means of distraction this morning is sweet baby Abby, who was an absolute riot.  She’s also a perfect example of one of my favorite things about photographing kids: the progression of how they feel about me taking their picture.  Usually, they start out just a little bit tentative, and look to mom and dad for help:

Which is a good time to get some detail shots:

Then, sloooowly, they begin to forget I’m there and start enjoying their surroundings:

Until finally, the best part — I’m no longer a concern:

Gems like this one just make me want to be a kid again.

Abby’s parents, Kim and Greg, were great sports (and equally fun to photograph!).  They love to make Abby laugh, and as a photographer there is nothing that makes my job easier than a family willing to do anything for a good giggle.

The next three shots make my day — the light, the closeness, the smiles.  How could they not? :)

I especially love this one.  And I don’t think I have to explain why.  Though I will add that, if this were my family, and if I worked in an office, I would absolutely keep a print of this on my desk to help speed up those slow days.  Just saying.  :D

Lastly, a perfect parting shot that brings back a lot of memories from my own childhood of me and my dad.  I would love to have a picture like this of the two of us.

Kim, Greg and Abby, what an awesome time I had with the three of you!  Your family was a blast to be around and your joy is contagious — thanks so much for sharing it with me.  Enjoy your photos!

One last Photo Party kiddo is coming your way this week (probably tomorrow, as I once again delay my quest for physical fitness).  So keep an eye out for little Livia, whose outfit will pretty much make you keel over from an overdose of cuteness.  Until then!

Baby Eli | New Haven, CT | Family

Alright, so I know I’ve already filled you to bursting with pint-sized happiness this week, but now I’d like to go right ahead and pop you.  I’m sorry, I can’t help it.  I have no control over how precious these kids and families are.  Just good luck, I guess!

Let me introduce you to the pin I’m going to use for all that popping.  His name is Eli, and you’re welcome in advance for your forthcoming smiles. :)

Hey now!  A new collage for the blog.  I couldn’t stop myself; Eli warranted the creation of a triptych!

Every time I look at this photo, all I can think is: NOM NOM NOM.

Eli has such a sweet disposition.  No matter where we put him, he was nothing but smiles.  I think this photo (on the steps of the lighthouse) is just perfect.

Once you see the next photo, the inspiration for Eli’s smiles becomes pretty obvious.  That boy is in love with his momma, Cate.  Just check out that face.

That hair!  Those eyes!

I love both of these next two so much; I couldn’t decide between them.  Cate is such a beautiful woman and an amazingly gentle mom.  Her love for Eli was palpable.

This is what joy looks like. :)

Cate, thank you so much for introducing me to Eli — you’ve been blessed with a beautiful family.  It was a pleasure to meet and talk with you, and a wonderful treat to photograph your son.  I hope you love these images!

Oh, Blog Reader.  If you thought my popping you meant you were finished, you’re wrong!  We’re switching back to girls tomorrow — Miss Abby!  See you then!

Baby Luca | New Haven, CT | Family

Next in the Photo Party lineup is a young man whose cheeks alone will brighten your day — I’m willing to bet money on it.  If the cheeks don’t do it, maybe his blond curls will.  And if not, then you my friend have got yourself one very black heart.  :)

Are you ready for this?  Ladies and gentlemen, meet Luca.

And meet Luca’s cheeks! :D

I love the following one on the left.  Photographing kids is kind of like photographing wildlife.  You can’t tell your subject what to do, and even though he knows you’re there (and keeps his eye on you to prove it), that doesn’t stop him from going about his business.  In this case, playing in the sand.  :)

Father (Hi, Jeremy!) and son. :)

Jeremy, Kate and Luca definitely win a well dressed award from me.  Look how cute and coordinated they are without matching exactly!  They even brought a blue blanket.  Yessss!

It never hurts to have a seriously adorable mom, either!  I love everything about this next one.

My heart is officially melted.  There is a heart puddle at the bottom of my abdomen.  How I’m still typing is a miracle.

Hello beautiful family!  And hello perfect backdrop for your perfect outfits! :)

Kate and Jeremy, your family is gorgeous!  Luca was a joy to photograph (and an even greater joy to edit — those cheeks!), and I loved meeting you all.  Your happiness definitely shines through in these pictures.  Enjoy them!

Plenty more heart melting coming your way tomorrow in the form of baby Eli!  IT NEVER STOPS AROUND HERE!

Baby Carter | New Haven, CT | Family

The Photo Party I mentioned in my previous post was headed up by none other than the insanely motivated Christa (whose very fit self you’ll most definitely remember from this session).  Christa and I worked together to plan the event, but somehow neither of us realized that the particular Sunday we selected was over Memorial Day weekend.  When you added the A+ perfect weather we were lucky enough to have, you can imagine that the seaside public park we met at got pretty dang busy pretty dang quickly.  (There were already people barbecuing when I arrived at 8:30 in the morning!)

By 10:00, when it was baby Carter’s turn, there was hardly an empty space to sit, let alone one in which to photograph a baby without a myriad of bathing suit-clad public in the background.  I just considered it a challenge. :)

So, meet Carter, who, as clearly evidenced from this first photo, was not quite sure how he felt about me and my camera.

But after a little time, you could say he warmed up to me. :)

We tried to get Carter to play on the antique carousel at the park, but he was not having it.  Every time we brought him near a horse, the poor boy burst into tears.  Carter’s beautiful momma, Ann (who actually got married in the Carousel Pavilion just a few years ago) helped Carter get a little more comfortable, but this is as close as we got.  The light in the carousel building is so amazingly soft and gorgeous — the whole thing is windows.  It is now my new goal to book a daytime wedding here.  I hear it’s affordable!  Any takers? ;)

Thank you Ann and Carter for spending time with me on a beautiful Sunday morning.  I hope you love these photos!

Tune in tomorrow for the biggest baby cheeks you’ve ever seen!  Guaranteed to make you smile! :)
