MEF Photography Blog! bio picture
  • Hello, friend! :D

Welcome, welcome! That's me over there. < -- I'm Molly, a San Francisco Bay Area-based photographer. I adore weddings, families and portraits, but my cat, food and house get a lot of my attention, too! I'm married to my very best friend, and we sing to each other a lot. I'm a mid-century modern home dweller. I'm always working, working, working to be better at life (a never-ending battle!). I get a kick out of simplicity, tea, bright colors, ice cream, cooking, sarcasm and books -- among other things. I love me some good, authentic, giggly love. And I love making people feel lovely in the midst of their good, authentic, giggly love. And if that's your thing, too, I'd love nothing more than to give you some good, authentic, giggly love photos. :)

Liz + Pete | Married at The Marin Headlands Center for the Arts

I feel like I say this for maybe every wedding, but I think one of the biggest honors of being asked to photograph such a sacred event is getting to meet the friends and families of my couples. I always walk away with a little fire burning in my heart for the beauty of family and what it means to be deeply loved by so many. Maybe I’m just lucky, but Liz + Pete’s wedding was another one of these days for me. There was so much love and support packed into that room, so much laughter and genuine pride. There were several times I had to stop shooting because I was laughing too much to keep my camera still. And isn’t that the way all weddings should be?

On with the photos! It was a perfectly January day, foggy and misty and crisp:

Get ready for some getting ready overload! (Pete snuck off early, so we spent some good time with Liz while she got beautiful, which, if you were wondering, doesn’t take much!)

Eliza did such a beautiful job on Liz’s hair and makeup.

Liz’s sweet momma. :)

I admit I went a little artistic for some of these images, so I’m going to post a few more than I normally would. Here’s a pretty classic version (and a favorite):

And here’s its artsy counterpart. I don’t know which I like better!

Liz was made for this dress and it was absolutely made for her. Loved the details.

See? Artsy. :)

Off to the ceremony site! Favorite!

Oh, hey! There’s that handsome groom. Hi, Pete! :D

A quick portrait of Liz before the ceremony began. You are a natural beauty, my friend.

This was through the glass doors to the ceremony room riiiiiight before Pete walked down the aisle! Favorite!

The Marin Headlands Center for the Arts is such a beautiful venue. Right?

The ceremony was conducted by Liz uncle and was filled to bursting with jokes—guests (and I!) were crying with laughter. But there was boundless sweetness, too (there may have been tears behind my camera during their vows). My most favorite kind of wedding, hands down. :D

Married! :D :D

Then we ran out side with great quickness as we had roughly 0.5 seconds of sunlight remaining. You two look like you could be royalty. :)

Oh, Marin Headlands. How do I love thee? Favorite!

I loved this angle Nicole grabbed—two heads are better than one! :)

Most favorite of the whole day, right here. Look at her stole!

I don’t usually post reception detail shots, but Svenja of Chestnut & Vine killed it on the florals and table design (That bouquet!) and Laurel from Esla Events did such a beautiful job keeping this wedding running like clockwork (P.S. She is hands down my favorite wedding planner and designer on the planet and I recommend her to everyone all the time every day). It was perfectly simple, elegant and welcoming.

I was surprised when I realized it, but this was the first wedding I’ve ever shot that had a live band and they (Big Skin Band) were awesome! This was actually just a light test before the dancing started, but I loved the way it came out.

As always, one of my most favorite shots to take at every wedding. I think the amount of time I spend trying to get the ring shot perfect drives my second shooter, Nicole, a little bonkers, but I can’t help it! Thanks for holding the video light just right, N. :D

Such a gorgeous room!

Loved this shot of Pete and his mom dancing.

Ending with a favorite!

Liz + Pete, you two are a force to be reckoned with and I anticipate that yours will be an immense and bright future. You make a perfect pair and you have surrounded yourselves with the love and kindness of genuine and wonderful friends and family; you are all lucky to have each other. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for asking me to photograph your wedding day—it was an honor and a pleasure. I hope you love these images, because there are plenty more where these came from! Now go conquer the world, my friends. xo, M

Lauren + Björn + Baby Girl | Maternity

Anyone who knows me knows that I am rarely at a loss for words. I can yammer with the best of them—just ask my husband. This is particularly odd when you know how much I like to not talk. But this is a total digression, because my point is actually that I don’t have words to describe how wonderful Lauren + Björn are (flashback to their engagement session and wedding). And if you know them, you will probably agree with me that there might not even exist the right words. They’re just that genuinely kind, caring and beautiful. So instead I’ll say here what I said on Facebook when I posted their sneak peek:

I ended 2013 with the type of session that makes my heart go pitter-patter. A beautiful couple, deeply in love and anticipating the arrival of their first child—a daughter—photographed in the warmth and comfort of their own cozy apartment. If everyone on planet earth wanted photos just like these, I could die a happy woman. :)

This sort of session is, without question, the type I want to do more of in the future. Showing people in their own spaces, just as they are. I can’t help but imagine their daughter, looking back at these images as an adult. Having taken these photos in the apartment where L+B began their relationship and their journey as husband and wife, and now where they’re starting a family, will make them all the more meaningful. And I don’t ever want to hear from anyone that their house isn’t “nice enough” to be photographed. Hogwash! Do you have windows? Do they let in light? Can you shove your clutter in a closet? Then invite me over! :D

Yammering over! Photo time!

Starting with a favorite! Just think how important this photo will be to their daughter in the future. Pardon me while I go find my tissues. :D

I love pregnant bellies, and Lauren’s is perfect!

Another favorite. This image was by request, and I think we exceeded expectations. So beautiful.

Sometimes you can tell how kind a person is just by their eyes. Björn is one of those people (so’s my husband!); he wears his love for Lauren on his sleeve and it is heartwarming to see. Just look! He’s so excited to become a dad. :)

This was actually just a test shot to check light and turned out to be a favorite. I love it because they weren’t paying any attention to me at all. :)

Be still my little heart. Favorite.

The light in their apartment was unreal. Their apartment in general was unreal; it was perfectly simple and perfectly them.

I’m pretty sure Björn was making stupid faces at Lauren to get her to laugh. Success! :D (P.S. Inspired by this photo of Diane Keaton. I think we did better.)

To end their session we dashed up to their roof before the sun completely set. That rusty smudge in the background of the photo on the right? The Golden Gate Bridge. The photo on the left? Favorite.

I just went back through and proofread this blog post only to realize that I labeled almost every image a favorite. I cannot tell a lie! Lauren + Björn, I have adored you since the moment I met you two years ago to talk about your wedding. I am so excited for what your future holds. Your gentle, sweet spirits will serve you and your family so well, and I have the utmost confidence that you will walk gracefully into parenthood. I look forward to meeting (and photographing!) your baby girl, and I wait patiently to learn her name and see how she takes after each of you. She is beyond lucky to have you as her parents—she is blessed. Thank you for asking me to document this season in your lives; I hope you love your photos. xo, M

Carrin + Logan | Married at The Reata

Welcome to the last wedding of my 2013 season, guys! And it’s a good one. It currently holds the title for most cowboy boots and hats worn by guests. And also for one of the most hopping dance floors. And also for some of the most beautiful fall light. But I’m going to quit my yammering, because Carrin + Logan have been patiently awaiting these images and I’m not going to make them hold their breaths for even one more second. Ready? :D

I have one word to describe Carrin: ADORABLE. Okay, I have two more words: WAY HAPPY. Look:

Carrin’s hair and makeup team did an awesome job.

Meanwhile, my outstanding second shooter, Nissa, was over at the hotel with the menfolk.

I’m confident in saying this group is more comfortable in cowboy boots than vests and ties, but they wore both quite well. Allow me to offer up my proof:

Oh, meet Logan’s twin: Hi, Walt! :D  In hindsight I see that their hair is quite different in length, but let’s just say I was glad they were wearing different colored ties. And even so, I had to do a number of double takes throughout the night. (They were watching a fellow groomsman trying to sew a button back on, by the way).

Hey, cutie ladies. I had to get a photo of the girls in their monogrammed robes. (That’s Walt’s brand new wife on the left!)

Loved this shot Nissa grabbed. Find the polka dots and you’ve found me! ;)

I won’t tell you all of my secrets, but guys, I’m way funny—these ladies agree! (Fine, okay, I’ll tell you my secret: I act like a complete and total idiot while shooting. Anything for a genuine smile!)

Carrin + Logan were hesitant to do a first look, but because of the end of Daylight Saving Time and their ceremony starting ten minutes before sunset, ultimately it was the best choice. We were able to get some beautiful natural-light portraits of the two of them, plus finish all of their family and bridal party photos before the guests even began to arrive. And I’m going to just put this out there: Their first look was downright perfect. See?

Logan was not disappointed to see his bride ahead of time:

Image on the right: Total favorite.

I don’t normally blog family portraits, but I have to include this photo because Momma Christina deserves major high fives. Carrin is a veterinarian who works three jobs, so her sweet mother took on most of the planning—she even found me! Your hard work did not go unnoticed! Plus, how beautiful was her dress?

Waiting to walk down the aisle!

:)

Cowboy boots and hats everywhere you looked!

You guys know how much I like giggles, right? Well this ceremony was full of them!

The face of a happy man.

That’s Carrin’s stepdad, Bob, officiating, by the way. MARRIED! :D

I realize there are cars in the background of this photo, but I don’t give one little hoot about it. This was one of maybe 10 seconds these two had alone after the ceremony ended and they’re basking in that “Oh! We’re married!” feeling. Favorite. :)

By the way! Carrin’s ring was a total surprise. Logan had the diamond reset before the wedding and the first time she saw it was when he put it on her finger. She said he chose well!

Ending this post with another favorite. I love this because I know that the two of them were singing to and giggling with each other during their entire dance. Love is a wonderful thing, yeah?

Carrin + Logan, thank you, thank you, thank you for inviting me to be a part of your day. It was a rollicking party that I will not soon forget. I hope you are as in love with these photos as I am proud to give them to you (Lots. Lots, lots, lots!) I see nothing but great things for your futures, and I cannot wait to see where life takes you. P.S. Please feel free to text me cute animal photos forever and ever. :) xo, M

Sarah + Mike | Engaged

Helloooooo, last engagement session of the year! Hi, Sarah + Mike! When I met with the two of them for the first time, Mike said that Sarah had shown him my work and he was struck by how happy the people look in my photographs. I think his exact words were, “Everyone looks so happy! I want to meet these happy people!” I was blown away by this comment, because he verbalized what I work very hard to achieve. It’s very gratifying to know that the message is coming across loud and clear! So thanks for that, Mike—it meant more than you might have realized. :)

Speaking of happy people.. let’s look at some photos! But first, can I make an observation that very attractive and fashionable people seem to hire me? And can I make another observation that they’re all extraordinarily kind? :D

I love a dark and moody, provocative photograph as much as the next guy, but man, happy photos are just my thing. :D Also, overwhelming hair envy happening right now.

The making of this photograph was far more difficult (and pointy!) than you’d expect. But it’s my favorite, so.. worth it!

I feel like the oak tree wide angle photograph is becoming my “thing.” I won’t complain. :)

I posted this as a sneak peak on Facebook with the following caption: “Rest assured that if you have a crinkle-nose smile, I will find it. :)” It’s totally true. Favorite.

I loved how easily Mike could get Sarah to laugh—particularly because it brought out this beautiful smile! :D

Over and over again! :D

Sarah, you’re a downright stunner. :)

Then we did a quick outfit change, and paused for a little champagne. Love the look on Mike’s face in the image on the right. :D

The first big rainstorm of the season was rolling in as we were shooting and the light was fading faaaast. But I’m not one to give up!

Photo on the right by special request. :)

Guys. Seriously, guys. You’re a perfect pair. Favorite.

Ending with another favorite! MOON!

Sarah + Mike, thanks for tromping through the brambles with me. Even though it was prickly, and windy, and warm and then shockingly cold, I had a blast spending the afternoon with you both. I am so excited you chose me to photograph your wedding and I am looking forward to it—it will be here in the blink of an eye! I hope you love these images and they make you smile (because I grinned like a fool while writing this whole post, so..)! xo, M

Jess, Matt, Madison + Hailey | Family

Can I just say something? I LOVE photographing families, and I don’t do it nearly enough. Sometimes I worry that people think of me only as a wedding photographer. And don’t get me wrong, I adore that, too, but there is something so charming and challenging and satisfying about family photography—especially working with multiple little ones who NEVER look in the same direction at the same time. Whenever I’m photographing a family, I do my best to show them as they truly are—happy, laughing, playing. Honest photos. And my head is always thirty, forty, fifty years down the road, thinking about what these images will mean to these kids when they’re older, when they need to reminisce about the beauty of childhood and marvel at how young and vital their parents were and see how much they were cherished. There are a handful from this session that are EXACTLY why I do this job, and I’m excited to share them with you. But first…

The last time I photographed this family, little Hailey was still in utero and sweet, spunky Madison still had her cubby baby cheeks. My, how time changes things! We got together a couple of weeks ago for a really quick session to grab these four an awesome Christmas card photo. And frankly, I think we went above and beyond. Let’s jump right in with my favorite, which I shall entitle: Perfection. :D

Goodness! Can you even handle this? Also, they call Hailey, “Hey-hey,” and I totally fell in love with it.

I’d love this huge over a fireplace. So wonderful.

Jess, you are such a beautiful woman. P.S. Check out Madison in the photo on the right (I LOVED doing that to my parents when I was little). :D

Imagine 40-year-old Madison looking at this photo and TRY not to get sentimental about it. Just try. You couldn’t, could you? ;)

Love, love, love, love, love. Favorite #2.

You already know what I’m going to say about the photo on the right, don’t you? I would adore an image like that of my mom and I.

And ending with another favorite (and another Christmas card contender, if you don’t mind my saying):

Jess, Matt, Madison + Hailey, you are an outstanding team. Jess + Matt, you are raising such beautiful, independent and kind children, and you should be proud of those babies because they are wonderful. I adore watching them grow, seeing how they take after each of you and how their personalities are blossoming. Thank you for giving me the honor of creating these memories for you; I hope you love them (because I totally do). xo, M
