MEF Photography Blog! bio picture
  • Hello, friend! :D

Welcome, welcome! That's me over there. < -- I'm Molly, a San Francisco Bay Area-based photographer. I adore weddings, families and portraits, but my cat, food and house get a lot of my attention, too! I'm married to my very best friend, and we sing to each other a lot. I'm a mid-century modern home dweller. I'm always working, working, working to be better at life (a never-ending battle!). I get a kick out of simplicity, tea, bright colors, ice cream, cooking, sarcasm and books -- among other things. I love me some good, authentic, giggly love. And I love making people feel lovely in the midst of their good, authentic, giggly love. And if that's your thing, too, I'd love nothing more than to give you some good, authentic, giggly love photos. :)

Kate + Evan | Married at The Holly Farm

I think I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating: One of the greatest parts of this job is being afforded the honor of meeting a wide variety of people whose paths I might otherwise never cross—not to mention those of their families’—and of knowing them during one of the most meaningful parts of their lives. I often can’t wrap my head around what a gift that is, and then weddings like Kate + Evan’s snap that reality into such clear relief that I beam with gratitude for days afterwards. The sorts of weddings that I’m asked to document are of a type that allow me access to large pools of really great people. And I don’t know about you, but sometimes I need the reminder that there are so many of them out there, just waiting to be met and befriended.

Kate + Evan got married at Holly Farm in Carmel, one of my most favorite venues (and my second time shooting there—remember Jessica + Justin?). And if you can’t figure out why, well… there’s not a lot I can do to help you. :) Let’s look!

Jimmy Choo sure knew what he was doing when he created this particular line of footwear. I think this is my fourth bride to sport some version of them—and I love them every dang time. :)

Oh, hi, Kate / Minnie Driver / Lisa Edelstein. :) P.S. Maybe my most favorite makeup picture ever.

Meanwhile, over in the Banana Cabana (not a joke; that’s actually what the house is called), my lovely second shooter Nicole was with the boys. Oh, hi, Evan / Young (and not terrifying) Arnold Schwarzenegger. And that’s Evan’s younger brother, whom I nicknamed “Baby” all day. Twins!

Can we talk about how wonderful the current trends in wedding dresses are? I love a good strapless dress (heck, I wore one myself), but I am so glad to be seeing such beautiful variety lately! Kate’s dress is by Claire Pettibone, by the way.

Onto the ceremony! This is where Evan was tucked away before he walked in, quietly reading over his vows.

Seeing each other for the first time. :)

Kate’s brother officiated. A+ to his beard!

How they stood during their readings (which were awesome):

In his vows, Evan included promises to be a good father. And I cried. :)

Love how she’s holding the ring.

My only (literally lone and singular) complaint about The Holly Farm is that the area for ceremonies is wide open and in full sun, which can make for tough lighting for photographs, especially on grass (everybody’s chins turn greeeeeen). So I was kind of crazy relieved when, just before Kate walked down the aisle, it clouded over. It was perfectly timed. I couldn’t ask for better light in which to photograph a loving face, such as, oh I don’t know, this one. :D

(Inserting my unsolicited advice: If you’re getting married outdoors where it’s sunny and shadeless, and you have wiggle room over your positioning, move your sweet selves around until you’re backlit—so the sun is behind your officiant. Your pictures will be much improved!)

MARRIED!

Why yes I do love you, fabulous bridal party. I especially love that each and every one of you are related. (Left to right: Bride’s brother and sister-in-law, bride’s brother, bride, groom, groom’s brother, groom’s sister-in-law, niece and brother.) :D Favorite!

You ladies made my day. :)

You gents weren’t so bad, either. (Far right: Evan’s actual twin brother!)

Portrait time! Is it okay that I obsessed over the back of this dress a little bit? Because I did. Favorite.

Um, the one on the right? Yeah. Favorite.

MOST FAVORITE! Seriously, I just want to pour this image into a bowl and eat it with a spoon.

Thanks for putting up with my wackiness, friends. :)

I found a metal crocodile. :)

Guys, love is pretty darn great. :)

Kate + Evan, thank you for inviting me into your lives and introducing me to your friends and family, who gave seriously some of the best speeches I have ever heard (and I’ve heard a lot!). You are a very lucky pair to be surrounded by so much unconditional love and support, all of which will serve you well in your journey together as a couple and growing family. Thank you, also, for inviting me back to Holly Farm; the venue fit you perfectly and I was happy to return. Your wedding was an absolute joy—a splendid mix of love and delicious wine. I hope you adore these photos. And I hope you have an insanely memorable time on your round-the-world honeymoon (which, for the millionth time, I am crazy jealous over)! Bon voyage, mes chèries! xo, M

Ryan + Alejandro | Married

The longer I do this job, the more my perspective changes about what makes a really great wedding. It used to be that I obsessed over details—venues, favors, tables, dresses, decoration. And while I still believe that a well-designed and -appointed wedding goes a long way to making your guests feel welcome and cared for, ultimately, it’s all window dressing. What matters, and what I pay special attention to when meeting couples for the first time, is personal connection, a couple’s love and their excitement to wed themselves to each other for keeps. True joy of that caliber can’t be faked, and no amount of styling can replace it if it’s missing. All of my couples this year overflow with this passion for one another. And Ryan + Alejandro (Remember their engagement session? I mean, could you forget it?) are a shining example of this. Their wedding was beautiful to look at, but their connection trumped it all. I’m going to stop yapping about it and start showing it to you. As always, the images speak for themselves. :)

Oh, hi, cutie Ryan. :D

Ryan is a flamenco dancer and has beautifully expressive hands. I maybe took too many photos of them throughout the day. :)

Meanwhile, my amazing second shooter, Nicole, was over in the boys’ suite. I always love seeing how many people it takes to dress a groom on his wedding day. :)

I feel like I say this a lot, but… Ring shots are one of my most favorite pictures to take. Especially when I find a flat, shiny surface. :D

Off to the ceremony! Get ready for a series of amazingly sweet and genuine faces made by Ryan that perfectly illustrate my preamble. Exhibit A: Being given away by her dad.

Exhibit B:  Sharing a quick glance with Alejandro during a reading.

Exhibit C: Listening to Alejandro’s vows. Just stop it, Ryan. Just stop being so adorable.

Try as they might, both Ryan + Alejandro struggled to get his ring on. Alejandro, just wait until you see your gallery to experience the full range of faces you made during this exercise. This was one of the tamer ones. :D

MARRIED! I’m totally in love with this image.

This was a WAY fun bridal party. Great friends are worth their weight in gold.

Portrait time! :D

Feel free to print this on a giant canvas and hang it right above your bed, my friends. :D

FAVORITE!

I have a love/hate relationship with Oleander. Right now, I love it. :)

Then we went inside and explored the halls of The Arsenal. Literally. ;) Favorite.

And then the staircase:

There’s something wonderfully gentle about this image.

Then we played in the freight elevator. And we enjoyed ourselves. :D

Whether that dress was made for Ryan, or Ryan was made for that dress is a debate for the ages. Thanks to Nicole for the photo on the right. :)

I just don’t know. I could stare at this photo all day, every day, forever. Most favorite.

Reception time!

Alejandro took the job of finding the garter quite seriously.

A perfect end to the evening. :)

Ryan + Alejandro, thank you for loving each other so tenderly and truly, and for asking me to photograph it for you. I am proud and honored to share these images with you and I hope you love them as much as I do. Your wedding was perfect and your relationship is beautiful. I cannot wait to see what the future brings you both—you deserve the world. :) xo, M

Kate + Evan | Engaged

I’ve been holding onto this one for a couple of weeks, which only matters when you know that I don’t like to keep secrets. Kate + Evan met me in the middle of nowhere (not an exaggeration) and braved trespassing, wild animals (okay, just bunnies—not that frightening), and lost sunglasses for their engagement session. They’re smart, they’re beautiful, and they’re BIG TIME wine buffs who got engaged in French wine country, so sneaking our way into a vineyard seemed only fitting. And that’s exactly what we did. Wanna see? :D

Let’s just start off with a photo that shows you how photogenic they are. I could have picked ANY image to satisfy this point, by the way:

Favorite!

The light was downright perfect that afternoon:

When I asked Kate + Evan to describe their relationship, a lot of what they talked about was their anticipation of their future together. This is my interpretation of that idea, so it shouldn’t surprise you that this is a favorite. ;)

This. This photo. Bingo. :D

I wasn’t joking about the wine thing, guys. They even brought with them a bottle of wine they bought on their engagement trip to France. The woman at the vineyard was insistent that they not drink this wine until 2013, and they thought their engagement session was as good a time as any to finally open it. It was delicious. :) Also, 1) Evan in a suit? And, 2) Kate’s hair? Perfection, both.

They also brought their customized wine glasses. (KAKERA are their initials; the design is their wedding logo. Orange is also their wedding color, and I happen to carry an orange blanket in the trunk of my car. I’m going to claim it was on purpose, but that’s mostly a lie. :D)

Who loves fields? I do! :D

Mmmm…

Ending with a favorite, as usual. ;)

Kate + Evan, I hope you love these photos. Thanks for spending an evening tromping through fields and breaching property lines with me. I am so looking forward to your wedding next month—I know it will be beautiful. I also hope you enjoyed the rest of that bottle of wine once you made it home! See you soon, pals. :D

May 2013 | Taking A Break

Happy May Day!

Normally on the first of the month, I post my goals and some musing about life. But this month? I’m taking a break.

Tomorrow is my 30th birthday, which in many (most) ways excites me, but has also thrown me into a state of self-evaluation that I need some more private time to explore. I’ll be back in June with more specific goals. For this month, however, I plan only to enjoy the warmth of spring (which, because of where I live, often confuses itself for the heat of summer), to continue to ruminate about my life and trajectory and—as always—to keep practicing the piano.

Until June!

Erin + Brian | Engaged

Erin has read my blog, so she knew when I met them for the first time at their session that I was going to ask her to describe their relationship in five words—she came prepared! As they talked it over in the car on the drive to Golden Gate Park last week, they put together a robust list, but as usual, two particular words stood out to me. First, was patience, which was evident to me immediately. They are just so kind to each other, it’s hard to miss. And second, that they are one another’s second chance. This is a second marriage for both Erin + Brian, and tears of genuine gratefulness welled in her eyes as she said the words (I was so moved, I followed suit!). In this line of work, deep connection and love are what matter most and shine the strongest in images. These two have them in spades.

Photo time!

The cherry blossoms have come and very nearly gone, so we snuck into the last remaining grove (along with about ten other photographers!) to use up what was left. :) Worth it!

Let’s discuss how awesome Brian’s shoes are, shall we?

I LOVED the back of Erin’s sweater. I also love sunset in Golden Gate Park.

Absolute, complete and total favorite times a million. True happiness is nothing to shake a stick at, guys.

Brian is a big baseball fan (coaching, umpiring AND spectating), and they wanted to incorporate something of the game into their session. I think this is fitting. :D

An image like this was one of Erin’s only requests. Happy to oblige!

Favorite!

Lookers-on clapped for them after we walked away from this fountain. :D

And two more favorites in a row to round out this post!

Hi. I love this.

Erin + Brian, individually, you two are something special and you have found something equally special in each other. Thank you so much for allowing me the privilege of photographing your love and the beginning of your second chance. Your joy is contagious and in our short time together, you transferred so much of it to me. I am excited for your wedding, to meet your families and to see what you’ve put together with Laurel. It will be a day to remember. :D I hope you love these photos! And Erin, you WILL get that sweater back! ;)
